SCHOLARSHIP: Announcing the Heinz College-National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture Scholarship

In conjunction with its newly established partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III College, the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC) is proud to announce the creation of the Heinz College-National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture Scholarship.

Beginning in 2010, Heinz College will award the scholarship to incoming students in the Master of Arts Management (MAM) program who are members of NAMAC. The award will be made at the time of admission (no separate application is necessary) and the student will receive at least $6,000 per semester – most will receive more. To be considered, applicants should indicate their NAMAC membership on the application for admission.

The MAM degree offHeinz School logoers many advantages and opportunities that undergraduate education and/or learning on the job cannot. This intensive program provides future leaders with managerial as well as interpersonal skills that ensure their success in the arts. Maintaining and strengthening cultural institutions, therefore, is a core focus of this program as well as essential to ensuring a vibrant media arts culture.

Heinz College distinguishes itself from other arts management and administration graduate degree programs by their unique approach. Their curriculum focuses on developing leadership, quantitative analysis and technology skills that no other institution can match. They offer a three-semester track and a traditional two-year track in Pittsburgh. They also offer a two-year dual degree split between Pittsburgh and Bologna, Italy, with students spending one year in each city, earning both a MAM degree and the GIOCA degree from the University of Bologna.

Heinz College continually stays a step ahead of changes in public affairs, technology, and management education. They were the first public affairs school to understand the importance of technology as both a management tool and policy area. Their interdisciplinary approach fosters exceptional programs in emerging issues in the public interest, as well as in well-established managerial and policy areas.

To learn more about the Heinz College and this new scholarship program, please contact David Eber, Director of Admissions (deber[at]cmu[dot]edu or 412-268-3347) or complete a brief prospective student profile on their website.

The “Doll Test” 60 Years Later –Surprising Results on Tonight’s Anderson Cooper

CNN.com

CNN correspondents Anderson Cooper and Soledad O’Brien address the “Doll Test” that was given in the 1940′s to contribute to the studies about how segregation impacts society. Sixty years later, surprising (to some) results show that today’s white children still have an overwhelming white bias: 76% of the white children picked the two darkest skin tones to reflect the “dumb” child; 66% of them chose the two darkest skin tones to reflect the “mean” child; and 66% chose the two darkest skin tones for the color that adults “don’t like.” Hmmm…

Some of the children have parents who obviously know the impact of race in America, and those children were more impartial to their selections. A bright point are many of the responses from Black children, including a young girl who says, “I like the color that I am,” when asked which color she’d like to be.

See parents talk about the different ways they address race with their young children as part of “AC360″ special coverage “Black or White: Kids on race” tonight 10 p.m. ET

Oliver Stone Wants to Film Tony Award Nominated Musical “Memphis”

(Take the Poll at the end of this post!)

The New York Times reported that Justin Timberlake –who’s from Memphis, Tennessee– wants to make a film version of the Tony Award® nominated Broadway musical “Memphis,” starring singer/actress Montego Glover. Legendary director Oliver Stone has also shown interest in turning the musical into a film.

For those who aren’t into musicals, you’ll be surprised to know that Broadway is getting “souled” up lately, with such successes as “Fela!” and a revival of August Wilson’s “Fences,” starring Viola Davis and Denzel Washington.

Timberlake is said to be interested in the lead role, but a leading lady hasn’t yet been discussed. In true Stage/Book/Television-to-Film style, they may just go the usual route and cast someone who isn’t necessarily an actress or a  stage singer. (It won’t be the first time.)

Or, Oliver Stone may decide to “keep it real” and cast someone with a stage background to bring the miscegenation storyline to life.
