Clutch Magazine featured an article from The Grio, and I’m glad that writer Kia Natisse had the stomach to watch Victoria’s Secret’s fashion show on CBS. In the past, Victoria’s Secret hasn’t been the best barometer of advances in minority hiring for their models, but now it’s confirmed. Supermodel Tyra Banks was probably one of the last proper Black models to grace their runway with her bubbly-bounce stomp. Model Selita Ebanks has also kept the fire going with sister-girl representation.

Unfortunately, Victoria’s Secret seems to have developed a big FAIL. With disclosure, I didn’t watch it… then again, I never do. When I read Ms. Natisse’s article from The Grio in Clutch Magazine, it only brought up the issues that I’ve always had with Victoria’s Secret –aside from their inability to make underwear that fits Black girls, or bras in any buxom sizes.
According to Kia:
That was an accident, right?
It was interesting, because in your “country girls” segment, your blonde-haired, blue-eyed models were featured on a set resembling a barn while country music blared down the runway. There was one woman of color, but much like the rest of the segments in the show, she seemed to be thrown in as a placating nod to “diversity.” However, somewhat mysteriously, all of the ethnic models got to walk the runway in the wild things segment, replete with “tribal” body paint.
