Video gaming (or “gaming”) is dominated by the male psyche, and they’ve been dominating how games are marketed. Attend any gaming conference, and you’ll be assaulted by “boobage” and pink shorts as ex-possible-Playmates try to get you to buy the latest video game.
Even with the introduction of such characters as Laura Croft, and the growth of female gaming communities like WomenGamers.com, women have been far and few…especially Black women. The second installment in the highly successful Left 4 Dead video game introduces Rochelle, one of four survivors of the apocalypse.

While watching the previews you can’t help but to wonder if the Rochelle character was inspired by our number one pick for the Best 10 Best Horror Movies Starring a Black Actress, “28 Days Later” starring Naomi Harris. Like I keep preaching, if popular culture –especially movies– start presenting interesting, Black female characters who are whole, human and inspiring, then everyone else will be expected to follow suit.
